What makes an eCommerce Web
site
A web site is a collection of web pages that contain links, text,
images, movies, and other files. These are located on an individual computer
that is connected to the Internet viewable by a browser. This computer
giving your browser the information is called a web server because it serves
this information to you so you can view it.
A web site usually has a theme and one or more functions. The main purpose
of a web site is to deliver a message to assist the viewer in taking action,
in Ecommerce this action is to get your viewer to buy.
What makes an ecommerce web site different than a regular web site is the
ability to sell a product or service and to collect a payment online. The merchant
no longer has to "physically" assist
the buyer and creates a powerful "Self Service" model. Ecommerce sites offer
ease, convenience and the ability to offer consumers just about anything they
want.
An ecommerce web site has one or more products for listed for sale and numerous
ways to buy (i.e. shopping cart, paypal, ebay, etc..) The
real secret is what goes on behind the scenes. The owner of an ecommerce web
site must be able to update or delete their offering at a moments notice. They
need access to the individual web pages. Most often, a shopping cart system is
utilized which allows the management of the products, the ability to check stock
levels and keep track of what was purchased and by whom. Further, an ecommerce
site is typically linked to a bank account to collect payments.
This process occurs through a payment gateway provided by a merchant account.
But more on that later.
An ecommerce web site is a collection of text files that contain links, text,
images, movies and other files written in HTML that promote and manage the sale
of goods. Next we'll learn about what a shopping cart is and the
different types available to manage the sale.
